“What if, just for tonight, we pretend there is no Gibson Street project? That I’m just Jack and you’re just Abby.” He shook his head, darted a look to the window, then to the door before he glanced back. “I’ll even be gone before you wake up and tomorrow we’ll see what happens. If I win and you hate me, fine, and if you win, I’ll not hold the fact that I lost millions of dollars against you forever.”

Confusion clouded her mind. “What are you asking for?”

“You. Abby, you were the first woman in a long time to accept me for myself. You didn’t know I had money. You didn’t know I was worth close to a billion dollars, and you didn’t know I own a Maserati and lost my license for thirty days for speeding. You saw just me and didn't care about anything else--”

“I knew how incredibly sexy you looked in your suits and how good you smelled.”

His smile turned wicked. “In all fairness, I wasn’t sure if you were a crack addict who really loved the Easter bunny, or the most amazing creature on earth. The point is you saw me—the person.”

Her heart cracked, she hated the mess they had effectively put themselves into. “I’m still seeing you, and I don’t want to hate you.”

“Then give me tonight and we’ll figure everything out tomorrow after the judge hears both sides.” He shoved a hand through his hair. “What do you think?”

  “I see.”  She glanced out the window then turned and focused on the coat of arms hanging above the fireplace.  What was she going to do?  She had her camera and proof of the murder, but until the killer was caught, she was in grave danger.   That she never dropped the evidence when she was being pursued by the murdering bastard was a miracle.  She thought of the dead woman and frowned, wondering what happened to the other woman from earlier in the week. Nausea rolled in the pit of her stomach as the reality of the situation consumed her. 

She’s dead, a voice whispered from the depths of her mind.

Val’s steps closed in behind her and his arms wrapped around her waist.  It comforted her. His solid chest came up hard against her back.  Instantly, she thought of his arousal in the alley.  Had circumstances been different she would have made love to him there. 

His breath teased the skin by her ear and the beat of her heart quickened.  “Share my bed with me.” 

The safety of being in his strong arms and having him in a wakened state comforted her. “Will you make love to me?”

“Yes.” The single word left his mouth in a hushed whisper and another breath of warmth. His body shifted and a hand splayed over her stomach then caressed down until his touch rested between her legs.  His fingers teased over the denim of her jeans and her body started to hum with desire.  

Lifting her arm, she cupped her hand around his neck, savoring the intimacy of the moment.  Val’s fingers continued to play as hot kisses from his lips left a wet trail on her throat.  Her nipples hardened, straining against her lace bra.  Her hold tightened around his neck.  Finally, she pulled away and turned to face him.

    Suave, real suave in winning over Prince Charming.

Her cheeks stung. Yep, she was blushing.

Son of a bitch! To think, I’m a professional.

  “I’m sure I would have remembered if we had met.” His voice was deep, sexy, and she highly doubted it was meant to turn her on. Or was it?

   “Um, I guess you wouldn’t believe me…”

   Something flickered in his dark, brown eyes and they sparkled. His long, jet-black lashes blinked in disbelief as he leaned in closer to her. The smell of his cologne affected her the same way it had on the bus earlier that day. When his nose brushed lightly against her neck up to her ear, her skin heated and her she lost her breath. Her nipples tightened beneath the light fabric from his skin touching hers. The air sucked out of her lungs and rational thought—hell, any thought had vanished.

   “I received an envelope today that smelled as wonderful as you.”
